| Carlos Salzedo was a French harpist and pianist virtuoso. After graduating from the Paris Conservatoire, he moved the United States as a professional harpist. Despite his enormous talent as a performer he is best remembered as a teacher and composer, who aimed to develop the harp's place as a solo instrument alike the piano. This work's variations highlight techniques from trills, to glissandos. The work is considered neoclassical with a more tonally conservative approach than many of his other compositions but with his usual high level of innovation. As one of the harps' most demanding works, it frequently appears on competition programs. | |
