Le spectre de la rose (Op. 7, H 83b)Hector Berlioz (1803 - 1869)
Arranged by Douglas Woodfull-Harris

Phoebe Edwards, Voice
Andrea Katz, piano
This is the second mélodie in Berlioz’ song cycle, Nuits d’été. The text is quite metaphysical, spoken from the perspective of a rose that has been plucked and worn on a man’s lapel on the evening of a ball. The rose, despite facing impending mortality, revels in the pleasure and honour of being worn by her captor.

BWV 849 Prelude and Fugue in C sharp minor book1Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)

Zhihan Jiang, Piano
A piece beginning with a sombre, recitative like Prelude, followed by a deeply spiritual and 5 voice Fugue built upon a main subject with two counter subjects throughout.

Scherzo No.4,Op.54 in E majorFrederic Chopin (1810 - 1849)

Zhihan Jiang, Piano
Whilst less dramatic than the other three Scherzos, Chopin's final Scherzo, the only one in a major tonality, contains some of his most introspective music characteristic of late Chopin. Indeed, the middle cantabile and operatic trio is contrasted with the beginning and ending of joyful colours, filled with nostalgia and spirit.

Scherzo No. 2 in Bb minor, Op. 31Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849)

Nguyen Tri Thong Truong, Piano
The 2nd Scherzo is Chopin\\\'s most well-known and most played from his set of 4 Scherzi. It has been described by Robert Schumann as \\\'overflowing with tenderness, boldness, love and contempt\\\'.
