As a piano suite based around poems, the first movement of this work, Ondine, portrays a spirit under shimmering waters luring her preys with her songs. This is starkly contrasted by le Gibet, describing a hanging corpse through a lone desert, creating a sense of a nihilistic void. The final movement depicts a devilish fiend Scarbo, who appears in and out of shadows during the night. |
