This sonata was originally handed in by Berg to Schoenberg as an assignment of composition. It only has one movement because Schoenberg said it is complete as it is. As a figure associated with the Second Viennese School, comprised with Arnold Schoenberg and his pupils Alban Berg and Anton Webern, Berg was regarded the most lyrical and romantic one. |

Initially subtitled ruined, triumphant arch and constellation, Schumann begins this work with the descending motif of Clara, expressing his distress towards her departure. Written for a fundraising event towards building a Beethoven monument, this work incorporates the spirit of late Beethoven and concludes in a seemingly never ending song-like slow movement in binary form. |
