Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is an opéra bouffon (a form of operetta) by Jacques Offenbach. The French text was written by Ludovic Halévy and later revised by Hector-Jonathan Crémieux.\r\nThe work, first performed in 1858, is said to be the first classical full-length operetta. This aria is from Act 3, sung by Eurydice as she inclines to regret her choice of following Pluto to the Underworld where he has her trapped. |

Sonata in B Minor Op.40 No.2 | Muzio Clementi (1752 - 1832) |
I. Molto adagio e Sostenuto – Allegro con fuoco e con espressione
II. Largo, mesto e patetico
III.Allegro – Tempo Primo – Presto |
Bernie Maitri, Piano |
One of three great sonatas Clementi published prior to his departure to Europe in 1802, this work was experimental in form and displays newly emerging stylistic directions from Clementi. The grand, lyrical opening features some unconvential harmonies, dissonances and consecutive fourths. The second movement is mostly in two part counterpoint with contrasting chordal sections.
The final presto section is a dazzling finale to the sonata, featuring hands crossing over and variations of a theme in rondo form. |
