Piano Trio in A minor, Op.50 | Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) |
I. Pezzo elegiaco |
Chih-Ting Yang, Violin |
Regina Back (cellist), Zhihan Jiang (pianist) |
Tchaikovsky\\\'s trio in A minor, Op. 50, is subtitled À la mémoire d’un grand artiste [In memory of a great artist], in reference to Nikolai Rubinstein, his close friend and mentor, who passed on 23 March 1881. This was the only work Tchaikovsky ever wrote for the piano trio. Tchaikovsky feared that he may have arranged music of a symphonic character as a trio, instead of writing directly for the instruments. First movement, Pezzo elegiaco is a darkly brooding and rather conventional romantic first movement with a beautiful opening cello solo with a theme that returns for a final funeral march. |
