Polina\\\'s aria from Pique Dame, or the Queen of Spades, is a Tchaikovsky opera set in the reign of Catherine the Great, composed in just 44 days. This aria is sung by Polina, a friend of the leading protagonist, in a salon setting, surrounded by friends. It is a performance within a performance of a ballad of life and death. |

Toccata in E minor BWV 914 | Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) |
|
Alicia Elsom, Piano |
One of J.S.Bach's seven Toccatas and it was written in 1710. A typical four-movement structure piece for Toccata with a brief opening section of an inconspicuous resemblance to Bach’s later organ work. |

Preludes | Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887 - 1959) |
Arranged by Ethan McALister |
Prelude 1. Andantino expressivo in E minor\\r\\n& \\r\\nPrelude 3. Andante in A minor |
Ethan McAlister, Electric Guitar |
The first prelude, subtitled \\\"Melodia lÃrica,\\\" opens with a lyrical melody reminiscent of a cello, before shifting to the tonic major in the bright and dance-like B section. The piece, in ternary form, is rounded out by the A section and a simple coda. \r\n\r\nThe third prelude is a hommage to Bach, in a simple AB form, the opening section makes heavy use of harmony idiomatic to the guitar a has an improvisational feel, this moves in a heavily chromatic B section in which the hommage to Bach becomes clear. \r\n\r\nI have arranged both these pieces for the electric guitar with notable use of the plectrum (pick). |
