Variations Op. 20 | Clara Wieck-Schumann (1819 - 1896) |
Theme, Variations I - VII |
Timothy O\'Malley, Piano |
Written after a theme by her husband Robert during the decline of his mental health, Clara's variations provide a poignant snapshot of their relationship in 1853. The next year, Robert's admission to the asylum left Clara distraught, many of her friends consoled her with their music. Among them, a young Brahms gave her a set of variations after the same theme, now his Op. 9. While Brahms variations are highly experimental, Clara's obsess over the theme instead using texture to elicit a highly emotive musical language. |
