Piano Sonata No.2 Op.36 (revised 1931) | Sergei Rachmaninov (1873 - 1943) |

Ray Liang, Piano |
The composition of Rachmaninov’s second piano sonata followed an arduous journey from its origin in 1913 to its revised form in 1931. Despite the being well received, Rachmaninov was discontent with the state of the work, labelling it ‘superfluous’ and ‘too long’. Thus, he created a revised version, cutting 120 bars and reducing parts of its immense texture. The piece begins with a rapid flurry, followed by the recurring motif of a descending third and a longing, chromatic falling theme, both of which pervade all three movements. |
